Some individuals claim that "science has proven that there never was a world-wide flood," even going to far as to claim "there is not even enough water on the Earth to make this possible." These statements are made in complete ignorance to scientific, archeological, and historic facts. They are also made in ignorance of the plain, visible truth before our very eyes. There is much evidence we could look at that supports the reality of a world-wide flood (such as fossils of water creatures being found on tops of mountains), but we will only look at the evidence that shows there is enough water here on Earth now to flood it.
- Prior to the flood, it had never rained before: "the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth ... But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground" (Genesis 2:5-6). As soon as Noah and his family were inside the ark, it rained for the very first time ever. But more than that, it rained for forty straight days and nights without letting up.
- "All the fountains of the great deep burst open..." (Genesis 7:11). If you look at a globe, you will see great crevices or cracks in the ocean. These are the various "ridges." These bear the evidence of what the Bible speaks about. When they split, the water contained in underground chambers came blasting forth and caused the water to rise much higher, covering the land.
- "...and the floodgates of the sky were opened" (Genesis 7:11). There used to be a canopy of water in our upper atmosphere that surrounded the entire Earth and filtered out the dangerous rays of the sun, creating a kind of greenhouse effect. During the flood, this water came down and added to the immensity of the flood.
All the water that came upon the Earth during the deluge has never left. It is still here. Some of that water retreated back into the underground chambers while some of it is frozen at our polar caps. The face of the Earth as we see it today is the result of a world-wide flood. Let us look at some plain, visible evidence to support a world-wide flood:
- Pick up a globe and hold it in your hands. Turn it about slowly and observe the ratio of water to land. Approximately 72% of the Earth's surface is covered by water. That is nearly three quarters!
- We are informed that if the polar ice caps were to melt, significant areas around the world would be flooded entirely. Antarctica accounts for 90% of the world's ice, being an average of 2,133 meters (7,000 feet) thick. If all that ice melted, sea levels around the world would rise about 61 meters (200 feet). There is a significant amount of ice covering Greenland, which if melted would add another 7 meters (20 feet) to the sea levels. If sea levels were to rise a mere 20 inches, which is no small amount, many coastal cities would be in danger—especially during storms.
- The oceans contain mountains and valleys, the tallest mountain in the world being Mauna Kea at 10,203 meters (33,476 feet), which starts on the ocean floor and rises to break the surface of the water. The Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean, being approximately 2,550 kilometers (1,580 miles) long, 69 kilometers (43 miles) wide, and 10.9994 kilometers (6.856 miles) deep (the maximum known depth).
- Do you know what water displacement is? Think of a bathtub filled three quarters of the way full. As soon as you get in, the water rises nearly to overflowing. If you were to excavate all the mountains in the world and push them into the oceans to fill the valleys, the water would be displaced enough to flood the entire world by several miles.
There are areas around the world that get flooded out today, but never again will there be a flood to destroy the entire Earth. How do we know this? Because God promised it. "This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, and I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh" (Genesis 9:12-15).
The next time the entire Earth is destroyed, it will be by fire and intense heat. "But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men" (2 Peter 3:7). "The day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up" (2 Peter 3:10). Forget the "global warming" conspiracy, which is nothing but a money making ploy. Think about that term: "global warming." What does the word "global" imply? That it affects the entire globe. If global warming were true, how come in recent years there have been record colds? If the world is warming on a global scale, having record colds would be impossible because every location should be getting warmer. But I digress.
As you can see, just from this evidence alone, there clearly was a world-wide flood and there currently is enough water on the Earth to be able to flood it again. The evidence has spoken for itself.
