OCEANOGRAPHY:
Oceanic Currents
Matthew Fontaine Maury is considered the father of modern oceanography. He had joined the US Navy in 1820 and had navigated around the world from 1832 to 1836. In 1855, he published what is considered to be the first textbook on modern oceanography, The Physical Geography of the Sea and Its Meteorology. While certainly not the first to identify the oceanic currents, his work became the definitive work on the subject. On his tombstone, a Scripture text was written, which he had said was the inspiration for his work. He had believed that the Bible had accurately identified the existence of the oceanic currents thousands of years before science had verified their existence. That Scripture text was:
"What is man, that Thou dost take thought of him? And the son of man, that Thou dost care for him? Yet Thou hast made him a little lower than God, And dost crown him with glory and majesty! Thou dost make him to rule over the works of Thy hands; Thou hast put all things under his feet, All sheep and oxen, And also the beasts of the field, The birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth!" Psalm 8:4-9Oceanic Springs
Science used to believe that the oceans were fed only by rivers and streams. However, in the 18th century, Matthew Maury demonstrated the existence of oceanic springs. The verse that led him to this discovery?
"Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?" Job 38:16Science also used to believe that the ocean floor was flat. But Matthew Maury believed his Bible when, in Jonah, it testified to the existence of mountains in the deep. If Jonah is merely a "fish story", how could this man testify to the mountains of the deep when science itself was completely ignorant to the fact?
"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But Thou hast brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God." Jonah 2:5-6
